Robert K. Berg

Professor

Ph.D. Iowa State University, 1987
M.S. Oklahoma State University, 1982

Dr. Robert Berg has managed the Southeast Research Farm near Beresford, SD since 1993. His career has focused primarily on applied field research and/or administration at off-campus experiment stations in South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, and Iowa. Current projects include documenting the long-term production and economics of various tillage and crop rotation systems as well as determining the feasibility of using high-oil corn in crop and livestock enterprises in the western Cornbelt. Previous projects included monitoring fertilizer and legume management for small grain dryland cropping systems plus atmospheric nutrient deposition and rangeland production in the Intermountain West. The competitiveness and physiology of soil microorganisms were also characterized in the Midwest and south central Great Plains, including strains of bacteria that nodulate various temperate and tropical legumes.

"Our station conducts off-campus research and extension projects in the north-central Great Plains for the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service. It consists of 560 acres of dryland row crops, small grains, and forages and annually feeds nearly 1,000 head of livestock (beef cattle and swine). Numerous public and private field days, tours, and workshops are hosted here and many of our projects are published as an annual station progress report each year."

Dr. Berg currently coordinates research and extension projects among at least 20 principal investigators, in addition to their technical staff and graduate students within the departments of Plant Science, Animal and Range Science, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, and Economics.
