Karl D. Glover

Associate Professor

Ph.D. Kansas State University 2000
M.S. South Dakota State University 1996

Dr. Glover is the most recent addition to the faculty in our department. He is the project leader for the spring wheat breeding and genetics program. His primary responsibility is to develop and release spring wheat varieties that are well adapted to the region and possess high yield potential along with good quality and disease resistance characteristics. In addition to these goals, some specific objectives and research areas that Dr. Glover plans to address within the program include: 1) Recurrent selection for Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance through the formation of a genetically complex spring wheat population using both unique sources of resistance and regionally adapted germplasm. 2) Optimal resource allocation within an FHB screening program where segregating populations are observed. 3) Implementation of molecular marker assisted selection (MAS) procedures with the specific short-term intent of increasing leaf rust resistance gene frequencies within the program. Selection of other traits using MAS will also take place. In addition to his variety development and research responsibilities, Dr. Glover teaches a graduate level plant breeding course every other fall semester entitled "Applied Plant Breeding".
