Professor Mike Catangui
is the Extension Entomologist for South Dakota.
He is the primary contact person for any issues related to insects that affect crops,
livestock, home gardens,
buildings, and human health. The public may send specimens
to him for identification,
biological information,
and control recommendations.
Information can be accessed
at the
SDSU
Extension Entomology Homepage. Dr. Catangui's current research
and
extension activities include
investigating the performance of biotechnology-enhanced corn
to control the European
corn borer, economic threshold
of the soybean aphid,
impact of alfalfa weevils and potato leafhoppers on alfalfa
quality, biology
of new sunflower pests,
and efficacy of new insecticides and seed treatments in controlling insects
of various crops.
Dr. Catangui's current graduate student is Mr. Jon Kieckhefer who is working on
the ecological impact
of transgenic
(Bt corn) crops for his Ph.D.
dissertation here in SD. Corn yield and mycotoxin content in relation with
emerging
insect pests of Bt corn will be Jon's main research topic. Sap beetles,
western bean cutworm, common stalk borer,
and corn root aphids may be emerging pests of transgenic corn. Mr. Eric
Beckendorf graduated (finally) and is now
with the USDA-ARS-NCARL.
According to Eric, he is busily writing manuscripts for journal publications.
Dr. Catangui is also a member of state committees
on biological control, grasshopper
and gypsy moth management,
and mosquito/West Nile virus surveillance. During
the gardening
(April-September) season, he is the
entomology
panelist in "Garden
Line", a weekly program on SD
Public Television.
