Effect of Potato Leafhoppers On The
Quality of Alfalfa in South Dakota

Dr. Mike Catangui, SDSU Extension Entomologist

Research conducted by SDSU Extension Entomology in Brookings and Clay counties on established (3- to 7-year-old) stands of alfalfa indicated reductions in percent crude protein by up to 4 percentage points on second cutting alfalfa if exposed to 1-5 potato leafhoppers per-sweep-of-an-insect-net. However, no reduction in yield (tonnage) was observed.
