Dr. Moechnig is the Extension Weed Specialist with responsibility for weed science education programs in the Cooperative Extension Service. Programs include weed control in field crops (corn, soybeans, sunflowers, wheat, oats, sorghum, millet, flax, canola, safflower, field peas, chickpeas, lentils), pasture/range, grasslands, CRP, right-of-ways, tree plantings, woodlands, home grounds, and noxious weeds on public and private lands. Activities include statewide weed control field evaluation, demonstration tests, and identifying new weed control techniques. Education programs emphasize emerging weed control issues and new technologies. Training is provided for extension educators, dealers, applicators, producers, homeowners, and public land managers. Annual publications include field research reports, weed control guides for crop and non-crop environments, and Extension Extras and are available electronically or from county extension offices. Dr. Moechnig is a regular guest on the weekly television program Garden Line to discuss weed control issues with homeowners during spring and summer. Other services include weed identification and field problem diagnosis related to herbicides. Research programs focus on evaluation of new weed control products, identifying economically optimal weed management programs, identifying effective weed control options for invasive weed species, and evaluating weed growth in relation to resource availability (temperature, light, and soil moisture) to improve cultural and chemical weed control techniques.
