The Department of Plant Science strives to provide a stimulating environment with expertise, funds, and facilities that promote excellence in advising, instruction, and professional development of students in the plant sciences (agronomy, crops, entomology, plant pathology, soils, water science, and weed science) within the national and world communities.
The Department provides an excelling, nationally competitive, educational program where students may attain intellectual and professional competence that will enable them to become self –directing, productive, and contributing members of society as well as their profession. The program provides awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the local, regional, and global society in which we live.
Our program continues to strengthen and increase the lifelong continuing education opportunities in the disciplines of the Department. Through our courses and Departmental activities we instill in our graduates the desire for personal growth, leadership, and development and service.
· Our Department teaches 111 courses and advises 180+ undergraduates and 35+ graduates. More than 30 of our courses are used by other majors and departments to meet SD Board of Regents, SDSU, or major requirements.
· We currently have 120+ majors and graduate 20 to 25 undergraduate majors/year, 15% of which are female.
· Globalization has been realized through faculty trips, student travel courses, foreign student work experiences, and class instruction.
