For the past 30+ years the Plant Science Department has had judging teams that participate in regional and national competitions. The teams have been very competitive and have been regional and national winners. The programs represent the quality and commitment our Department has toward our students and our teaching program. Crop judging is advanced training in seed and plant identification of crops and weeds, seed analysis and grain market grading and quality. Soil judging is advanced practical training in the evaluation of the physical and chemical properties of soils important for land use interpretations/decisions, soil descriptions/morphology, and classification. The teams have placed in the top 50% of competing teams at national and regional competitions most of the time. We have had first place teams in the nation and first place individuals as well. Teams are strongly supported by the Department, the seed industry, private donors, and we have established SDSU Foundation Endowments to help support travel costs associated with the teams. In addition, one major donor has gifted a large endowment since 2000 to provide scholarships to members of the soil judging team as well.
