The Plant Science Department is committed to graduate education in applied and basic plant sciences and providing experiences in instruction, grant writing to produce competitive students that are well-prepared for careers in the plant sciences. Graduate training includes classroom instruction, seminars that hone oral and written skills, and experience in laboratory and field research techniques. Departmental diversity encourages collaborations among disciplines and research programs that inform graduate training.
The Plant Science Department is an integrated department that includes programs in crop production, plant breeding, entomology, plant pathology, soils, GIS, water management, weed science, and biotechnology. The primary goals of the department are to conduct research in the above areas, to transmit the results to the public, and to help prepare students for a quality life which includes preparation for an occupation in one or more of the above-mentioned disciplines.

A student with a research project that combines the emphasis of different departments may elect with the approval of the advisor to option for a M.S. or Ph.D. in Biological Sciences. The area of biotechnology is included in this cross disciplinary emphasis.
