The Department of Plant Sciences emphasizes international education opportunities, conference attendance, and professional consulting in line with the institution mission sponsored by the Office of International Affairs (OIA). While the department does not have a coordinator of international opportunities, events are organized by faculty though educational opportunities usually also involve the SDSU Office of International Affairs.
AS 482/582 is an overarching course title for a series of short term international travel opportunities for SDSU students. The courses were initiated by asking students where they would like to travel to and what would they like to learn and encounter. Currently, the course includes four annual opportunities as well as special opportunities on an on-demand basis. The two led by Plant Science include:
Credit Africa-A comprehensive 3 week travel course, done at the end of spring semester, through the countries of Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Ghana. The course is tailored to the disciplines of students who sign up for the course. The course also has a significant cultural and ecotourism component. Examples of the cultural side include a voodoo ceremony, visits with an African royal family, dance troupes, in depth African history experiences and family home stays. Game parks, camel travel and camping in the Sahara desert and a canopy walk would illustrate ecotourism. Depending on the student make up, school and university visits, hospital tours and meetings with economists or wildlife officials are often arranged. Another real advantage of the course is that stopover stays in Europe on the return are easily arranged.
Credit Arctic-An all inclusive road and train trip to Hudson Bay, Canada, taken at the end of August. The trip focuses on climate change and First Nation perspectives. The 1600 mile round trip includes stays at US and Canadian Provincial and National Parks, extensive outdoor interpretive work and research, wildlife viewing and discussions with tribal leaders. From polar bears and beluga whales to overnight train rides and camping in the wild of Riding Mountain National Park, the trip offers a spectacular opportunity to see the direct effects of climate change, learn how tribal nations are dealing with environmental issues and interact with government researchers on a host of topics.
SDSU Office of International Affairs
The primary mission of the SDSU Office of International Affairs is to foster an environment in which the university's many constituents—administrators, faculty, staff, students, residents of the local community and the state of South Dakota—have varied opportunities to gain appreciation, knowledge, and understanding of other cultures and global trends.
OIA pursues this mission by, 1) Facilitating the ability of constituents to travel, study, teach, and engage in international education projects around the world, 2) Promoting outreach activities that help disseminate international information and perspectives throughout the local region and South Dakota, 3) Supporting the land-grant mission of the university by helping to prepare graduates who have international and global perspectives.
