The Plant Science Department serves a wide variety of clientele. Most project areas generate information to colleagues, other researchers, consultants, Extension educators, and the public.
· Plant breeders release cultivars and produce germplasm that is used by the industry and that serve growers, seed companies, processors, and end users.
· Collaborative efforts between breeding programs, genomics, pest management and agronomic specialists provide valuable sources of information for producers, county-based educators and producers.
· Genomics labs work collaboratively with the breeders to develop marker assisted selection methods, QTL mapping, molecular markers, and other comparative genomics tools that can be used by breeders to aid in development of germplasm and varieties.
· Pest management areas such as weed, pathology and entomology produce critical information that serves regulatory agencies in areas such as pesticide labeling. Pest management areas also develop management strategies that growers can use in the form of recommended threshold recommendations.
· South Dakota producers utilize research-based information which is delivered directly by researchers through a variety of Experiment Station Field Days, Technical Bulletins or through Extension delivery.
Collaborations within and outside the Plant Science Department are varied. External collaborations, including industry, other universities, and USDA-ARS are also critical to the Department’s mission and vision.
Current and planned collaborations:
· among the breeders and geneticists at SDSU
· among regional programs, especially North Dakota, Minnesota, and Nebraska; Tristate Regional Nursery (University of Minnesota, NDSU, and SDSU)
· with pest research and extension faculty
· with USDA, ARS, Cereal Crops Research, NCARL and other units
