Traditional sustainable agricultural production is the basis for SD rural economy.
Producers face numerous challenges to produce food, energy, and fiber for the county, meet water quality goals, and maintain an economically solvent operation.
Critical issues for South Dakota agriculture in the future are:
· Develop and validate site-specific integrated crop management practices that consider integrated pest management techniques, marketing requirements, tillage, and soil fertility status (reducing the reliance on single pest control options)
· Develop techniques that will increase agronomic energy efficiency
· Develop and validate site-specific soil fertility and precision conservation techniques that will reduce environmental impacts including reducing the mining of stored carbon and pesticide off-site movement and preventing soil and water erosion from a wide range of production systems
· Fully integrate scientists from different disciplines into teams that can solve complex problems
· Fully integrate new molecular, stable isotopic, food quality analysis, and statistical tools into agronomic problem solving
