The Risk Map below applies to cereals in the most susceptible stages for infection.
For wheat that occurs at flowering (Feekes 10.51).
For barley flowering occurs around head emergence

SPECIAL COMMENTARY July 15, 2008
Due to the dry conditions recently experienced in SD, along with the advanced crop stage in SW, we have passed out of the time of risk for FHB. This will be the last regular update to the forecast.
In summary, the scab situation in SD for 2008 is as follows: areas of WW production in the state were at medium to high risk for scab during the critical time of flowering, and it is expected that some scab will be reported from these areas. But because of the high level of fungicide use at heading, and the relatively cool conditions, severity is expected to be low on average. Those with untreated, susceptible varieties which were headed or flowering around the first two weeks of June may expect to see levels as high as around 10% disease, but those cases should be rare.
For SW areas, risk has been moderate to low for most of the state, with dry conditions extending through the late flowering and milk stages, setting up a situation where disease impact at harvest should be very low (undetectable, or <1%). Some very early planted fields may have experienced some time of elevated risk, and may contain detectable levels of scab in the field, however severity should remain low there as well.
Of course, local conditions may have influenced your fields differently, and your final disease levels may differ accordingly.
As of today, scab has been observed on some samples in our diagnostic clinic, as well as in the fields around the state, but incidence has been very low.
