Northern Grain Insect Research Laboratory: Located in Brookings, SD. Mission of NGIRL is to develop and evaluate sustainable production systems that enhance environmental quality and provide health, safety, and profitability for agriculture in the Northern Great Plains Area, with emphasis on crop and pest management.

North Central Soil Conservation Laboratory. Located in Morris, MN (west central MN). The North Central Soil Conservation Research Laboratory (NCSCRL) was established in Morris, Minnesota, in 1958 to conduct research on various agricultural problems in the transitional subhumid zone of the United States. Naturally occurring challenges specific to the NCSCRL mission include (1) variable soil types within a farming/field unit that preclude uniform management, (2) poorly distributed and intensive precipitation that causes water runoff and soil erosion as well as plant growth stress, (3) temperature extremes causing problems ranging from deep soil freezing to heat/water stress in growing crops, and (4) weed/pest pressures that cause economic and environmental concerns.

Software

Free Software Sites:

1. NCSCRL software website:

http://www.morris.ars.usda.gov/morris/products/products.htm

This website contains some free software that was developed by the NCSCRL in Morris, MN. Among the free software programs you can download are:

(A) The Nitrogen Decision Aid. This is a computerized program that predicts the amount of N mineralized from planting to side-dress or 5-leaf growth-stage. By applying just enough N-fertilizer to reach the critical soil nitrate concentration it is possible reduce this waste. This model is designed for Northern climates that will have some frost in the soil during the winter and

(B)WeedCast. WeedCast is an easy to use Windows 95/98 based software program that forecasts three types of weed growth: Emergence Potential, Emergence Timing and Seedling Height. The forecasted data provides valuable information that can be used in making weed management decisions. WeedCast requires a minimal amount of input of Last Years's Crop, Tillage System, Soil Type and Soil Water Content as well as weather inputs are min-max. temperature and rainfall.
