SOUTH DAKOTA FOUNDATION SEED The SOUTH DAKOTA FOUNDATION SEED STOCKS DIVISION, INC. (SD FSSD) was organized in 1944 and incorporated in 1945 as a nonprofit corporation. The purpose of SD FSSD is to increase and distribute agronomically superior varieties of seed and propagating materials released by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, ARS/USDA and other agricultural experiment stations for the benefit of South Dakota agriculture and the citizens of this state. In addition, storage is provided for a reserve of pure seed stock materials. The entire operation is financed through the sale of seed. An eleven- person board directs the organization. Six directors hold positions on the board by virtue of their administrative position at the university. Five members are nominated by the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association (SDCIA) and a manager is hired who also serves as secretary-treasurer and is a staff member of the Plant Science Department. The SD FSSD operates under a memorandum of understanding with the SDSU Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), SD Crop Improvement Association and the SD Seed Trade Association (SDSTA). Breeder seed developed and supplied to the FSSD is increased by FSSD, inspected by the SDCIA and distributed as Foundation seed to SDCIA members and Seed Trade members on an established priority basis. Annual production of approximately 1,000-1,200 acres of small grains, flax, millet, corn, soybeans, grasses and alfalfa are increased by FSSD. Any profits realized to support grants requests from the university for varietal research and development. A close working relationship is maintained between FSSD and public research programs. The office, conditioning plant and warehouses are located on the SDSU campus in Brookings and are operated by two full time employees, a part time secretary, and three student workers in addition to the manager. All production is conditioned, packaged and distributed from the FSSD Seed Plant in Brookings. (Revised 11-02) 2009 FOUNDATION SEED PRICE AND INVENTORY LIST

New Releases Brick (tested as SD3851) Hard
Red Spring Wheat was developed by the SDSU spring wheat breeding program
and will be released by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station
in 2009. The name Brick represents its dark red color and heavy test
weight. It is the result
of the cross of ND2897/SD3219//SD3414.
Brick is extremely early, maturing two days earlier than Briggs and
is similar in height. Its=
source of Fusarium Head Blight resistance is the Chinese parent, Sumai 3
and has shown the best scab resistance of any other variety in South
Dakota trials. Yield potential
is equal to Briggs over the past four years in CPT and AYT breeding trials
with the exception of 2007, a year with a high leaf rust infection.
Leaf rust resistance is rated as moderately resistant.
Brick's test weight is the highest among released varieties in both
CPT and AYT breeder trials and protein content is average.
There will be a $0.30/bushel research fee on the sales of
Registered and Certified Brick spring wheat and PVP will be applied for.

Dakota Ag Experiment Station with Foundation Seed first released in
2009. It is an early
maturing variety, heading one day earlier than Don and two days before
Reeves. Colt is the result
of a cross of SD97575/ND941119. It
has a test weight superior to Stallion, Don and Jerry with lodging
resistance equal to Jerry, but better than Stallion.
Crown Rust resistance and yield potential is higher than both Don
and Reeves.
There will be a $0.20/bushel research fee on the sales of
Registered and Certified Colt oat and PVP will be applied for. AStreaker@
Hull-less Oat Streaker
(tested as SD020301-20) Hull-less oat and was developed by the South
Dakota Ag Experiment Station and will be released as Foundation Seed
this next spring. It is a
medium maturing variety, later than Buff by one day, but earlier than
Stark. Streaker is equal to
Buff in test weight. It was
four bushels higher in yield trials at 18 breeder locations and one
bushel higher in the 2008 CPT trials.
It is moderately resistant to crown rust. Streaker is three
inches taller than Buff with less lodging resistance.
It is the result of the cross of ND950864/SD97781.
There will be a $0.20/bushel research fee on the sales of
Registered and Certified Streaker Hull-less oat and PVP will be applied
for. A2008
