South Dakota Kentucky Bluegrass

Seed Certification Standards


I.
Field Standards
A. A field to be eligible for the production of Certified seed must have been into native Kentucky bluegrass sod for a minimum of ten years. Certified seed cannot be planted for the production of Certified seed.

B. A field inspection must be made each year that a Certified seed crop is to be harvested.

C. A seed field to be eligible for the production of Certified seed must be isolated from any other like species by a minimum of ten rods.

D. Prior approval for all fields Certified must be obtained from the certifying agency.



II. Field Inspection
A. A field inspection is to be made after heading but before harvesting.

B. A crop automatically becomes ineligible for certification if harvested before the field inspection is made.



III. Seed Conditioning
All seed from inspected acreages shall be conditioned by a South Dakota Approved Conditioner.



IV. Seed Standards

Pure seed (minimum) 97.00%
Varietal purity (kind uniformity) (maximum) .10%
Other cultivated crop seed (maximum)* None
Other native grass species (maximum) .10%
Inert matter (maximum) 3.00%
Noxious or objectionable weeds** None
Weed seed (maximum) .10%
Germination (minimum) 85.00%

* Other cultivated crop seeds include orchardgrass, tall fescue, ryegrasses, bentgrass, timothy and red top.
** Noxious and objectionable weeds are: Canada thistle, field bindweed, leafy spurge, hoary cress (perennial peppergrass), perennial sowthistle, Russian knapweed, quackgrass, horse nettle, wild oats, field pennycress, wild carrot, buffalobur, hedge bindweed, wild mustard, dodder, ivyleaf morning glory, annual bluegrass (Poa Annua), buckhorn plantain, St. John's wort, red sorrel, docks, oxeye daisy, black medic, dandelion, chickweed, crabgrass, yarrow and barnyardgrass.
