Dandelion

Life cycle: Perennial

Leaves: Long, broadest at the outside tip.

Stems: Hollow with a milky juice.

Flowers: Yellow

Roots: Deep fleshy taproot.

Comments: Very common.

Control

Cultural: Several hand tools available for removing rosettes and taproots. Raise mower height and plant grass seed where turf is thin to compete with dandelion seedlings.

Foliar Herbicides: Treat in spring before flowering. Fall spray is excellent. Products containing 2,4-D or apply weed/feed to wet leaves. May also use products containing triclopyr (Turflon), metsulfuron (Manor), or fluroxypyr (Spotlight).

Soil Herbicides: For landscapes, may use isoxaben (Gallery or Portrait) to suppress the growth of plants germinating from seed.
