Auricles

Quackgrass, Smooth Bromegrass, Tall Fescue

Life cycle: Perennials

Leaves: Tall fescue has clump-like growth, upright, prominently veined leaves. Quackgrass and smooth bromegrass spread by creeping roots called rhizomes. Smooth bromegrass may have a faint “W” mark on the leaves whereas quackgrass will have small appendages called auricles at the base of the leaf that clasp the stem.

Stems: Smooth, without hairs

Roots: Quackgrass or bromegrass have long, white rhizomes. Fescue has fibrous roots.

Comments: No selective herbicides. Fertilize, water, and mow more frequently.

Control

Cultural: Dig isolated fescue clumps and re-seed turf grass

Foliar Herbicides: Chlorsulfuron (Corsair) is labeled for control of tall fescue control. Most effective option may be to renovate area with a glyphosate (Roundup) product and re-seed turf grass.
